Grid-Tied With Backup Power

Backup power is a smart addition to your grid-tied solar system.  In some areas people experience more power outages, longer lasting outages than others, or they just want to be prepaired.  This system is similar to the grid-tied previously explained except they've added batteries and maybe a generator.  If a generator is included sometimes there is usually a transfer switch of some sort, manual or automatic.  Manual meaning you would physically switch it yourself. With automatic, seconds after the power goes down the switch would disconnect from grid power and begin using your battery storage.  If there were to be a time for some reason more power than usual was being used, and/or cloudy weather reduced the amount of sun exposure to the solar panels, while experiencing an outage the generator can then charge the batteries, which as usual would power the house.  On a typical day since this is also a grid-tied system, when the batteries are charged the system operates like a grid-tied system as previously explained.  As far as sizing the batteries and generator for a grid-tied backup system, there's a "partial home backup" or a "whole home backup".  With a partial home backup there would often be a new breaker panel called the "essentials" or critical loads, where during an outage only the important/essential circuits would have power.  Examples are heat, fridges, freezers, internet, some power outlets, maybe some lights, etc.  Where in a "whole home backup" the system would be sized large enough to power the whole home. For these options usually we size the batteries to last around 12 or 24 hours depending on what you want, keeping in mind the sun usually comes out again the next day.
